Mark Register – Is capping bets on matches and monitoring betting activity the best way to reduce the incentive for match-fixing?

Stephen Ellis – Capping betting is just one solution and to preface this I’m not speaking on behalf of Unikrn this is my own personal opinion.

Capping betting is one way to reduce the incentivization. There should also be a level of risk or consequence for a player because if you’re offering betting on an online tournament for some random thing and there’s really no consequence for that player playing CS on a random account and he match-fixes an online tournament there’s really no consequence.

I think it’s on whoever is providing the platform to bet on should take care of this, at least for very significant tournaments where the consequences of match-fixing are more drastic.

Because of the way online systems work and how the anonymity and their lack of consequences in the online environment…I hope there are not odds being offered on less significant tournaments because it is a very slippery slope and it can be very bad especially for the younger audience where they don’t see the repercussions of their actions.

It’s also down to the teams, the tournament organizers, and also the platforms to educate the players and let them understand that there are consequences to their actions.

Some third-party betting companies are less prominent but maybe are not the most legally sound or at least operating in the grey area so they don’t really put the right checks and balances in place to deter underage betting or fixing odds.

I’m not advocating on behalf of Unikrn I just know speaking from experience…Unikrn has a very rigorous system and their back end is checked by a company called Tabcorp which is one of the big partners and they’re a very large wagering firm and their whole backend checks for anomalies and red flags in betting keep things safe.

I’m not sure these third parties that are in Esports right now offer that.

Let’s say there’s 10 to 1 odds on a losing team and then someone’s betting really high on the losing team, I’m not sure they have the proper systems in place to to monitor that to quickly raise it to the attention of the tournament organizers.

I think there actually has to be a relationship between the betting platforms and the tournament organizers.

They should be very transparent especially at this point where we are in infancy to have transparency there and say look we’re offering odds, we’re getting significant traffic, this is happening, you may want to look into this and investigate what’s going on.

We need to have a level of transparency and cooperation if we’re gonna see this as an alternate revenue source for the industry.
